Europe Crypto Exchanges Face New ID Requirements

A crackdown on cryptocurrency exchange platforms via stricter rules has been agreed to by European Union states and legislators. The move comes to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing, according to a statement on the agreement.

The agreement must now must be formally adopted by EU states and European legislators and then turned into national laws within 18 months.

The Korea Blockchain Industry Association said it will adopt a raft of self-regulatory measures to boost transparency in trading of cryptocurrencies.

Composed of 14 South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges, the association said its members agreed to require investors to verify their identification through financial institutions and use a single account to carry out transactions.

A New York woman allegedly laundered more than $85,000 USD through bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to support the Islamic State group.

Zoobia Shahnaz, a 27-year-old hospital technician, was charged with bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and three counts of money laundering.
